Theta's dialogue in panel 3 is one of my favourites.

So they're opponents in a game, not mortal enemies where one has to kill the other to survive... and they can talk to each other.... you have to imagine a world where the ecosystem is so rich and the bodies of the locals so efficient that they can afford to build up vast amounts of extra internal food reserves... and it's more worthwhile for predators not to kill but to extract (orgiastically of course) and release...

It's still evolution though a most subversively warped version... and warped on what we think of as the 'nicer' side at that eg:- the locals are built for fun and a lot of it (I'm having a good laugh over Theta's referring to his 'fun bits' too btw).
That is, they're adapted for it and evolved that way. The best survival characteristics for the locals would be to have superfast supremely efficient metabolisms, be able to build up huge reserves of extra extractable food, which they can give up orgasmically when caught, give a good time while doing it (or getting done) and be able to recover quickly once released.

I might also add that Nature and Evolution are not blind and stupid like they are on Earth, on Cyeatea there is a profound element added...Compassion.

Yes, point conceded, but the rules of evolution still apply. Darwin would appreciate it but probably find it a bit shocking. If you allow a generous 'magical' component to the biology it's all quite logical. Outrageous definitely but relentlessly nice too.
